This is the inaugural poem for President Bill Clinton, read by the poet herself at Clinton's inauguration on January 20th, 1993. Full of hope and optimism for the future, it was the first inaugural recitation since that of Robert Frost for President John F. Kennedy's inauguration in 1961. It was followed by the poem "A Brave and Startling Truth" delivered for the 50th anniversary of the United Nations.

Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was an American poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She is best known for her series of seven autobiographies focusing on her childhood and early adult life experiences. Centering on themes such as racism, family, identity and travel, her books have won her dozens of awards, and is considered to have attempted to challenge the structure of the autobiography by critiquing and expanding the genre.
