Hardback is overall in GOOD condition.

  • Red cloth covers have blind tooled borders, gilt ornament and title. 
  • Boards show some wear, smudges, splitting of cloth at shoulders, edgewear.  Corners are frayed, with exposed board.  See photos for details.  
  • Spine is cocked.  Gilt text is dimmed, spine is faded, with chipped and frayed ends.  See photos.  
  • Binding is intact.  Stitching is visible at some openings, e.g. pages 96-97.  See photos.
  • Pastedowns and feps are toned and stained, front fep is loose, owner's mark on front fep.  See photos. 
  • Interior has two gatherings darkened and foxed; a stain at pages 332-333, the remainder gently age-toned, with some smudges.  See photos.  
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. 
  • Text block edges have some edgewear at foot.

Novel by Susanna Strickland Moodie (1803-1885), who was born in England and then spent her adulthood in Canada.  Moodie is well known for her memoir, Roughing it in the Bush; her writing has influenced and been revisited by Margaret Atwood and Carol Shields.
