MADELEINE VIONNET Betty Kirke 1998 [Signed] Fashion haute couture Dress Design

Product Description

Madeleine Vionnet

by Betty Kirke

Madeleine Vionnet (1876-1975) was a French fashion designer. Called the "Queen of the bias cut" (a most difficult and desirable cut for dresses) and "the architect among dressmakers", Vionnet is best known today for her elegant Grecian-style dresses and for popularizing the bias cut within the fashion world.

She was "the greatest dressmaker in the world...she is legendary among haute couture designers, and her dresses considered masterpieces... In her twenty-year career she created over twelve thousand garments, changing the course of fashion with her innovative and sensuous designs... [This] is the definitive study of the artist Vionnet - her life and her techniques. Tracing her rise in Parisian haute couture from her beginning as a twelve-year-old apprentice to premier of an atelier to proprietor of her own house of couture..." (from the jacket).

Lavishly illustrated with over 400 photos and illustrations, research for the book included interviews with Vionnet, her relatives, former employees and her colleagues. 244 pages. 10.75 X 14.75 inches.
