The complete Latin works of the philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca, aka Seneca the Younger--"a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and—in one work—humorist of the Silver Age of Latin literature."[Wikipedia] Includes a number of essays and letters, as well as notes, works of the elders, and related writings. Vol 1: 572 pp. Vol 2: 442 pp + two very extensive indexes. Vol 3: 718 pp. Vol 4: 419 pp + two indexes & 2 pp of "corrigenda." 3.25 x 5 inches.

Ex libris bookplate belonging to Edward Moore features the Moore family crest with the  Latin saying "Audaces Fortuna Juvat" (Fortune favors the bold).

Leatherbound volumes are overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Full leather bindings with gilt borders, including along edge of covers.
  • Boards show commensurate wear and dirt.
  • While much of the board edges still display gilt filigree, parts of some volumes are scuffed to exposed board.
  • Some corners are very gently bumped and/or rubbed.
  • Spine has 5 raised bands and a red title block, with elaborate gilt decorations.
  • Engraved title page in Vol 1.
  • Re-cased bindings are strong and tight. Boards appear to be original.
  • Marble endpapers show little to no sign of age or wear.  
  • Each vol has bookseller stamp on ffep with handwritten unique number.
  • Ffep of vol 1 has prior bookseller notes in paper.
  • Volume 1 has bookplate on the pastedown.
  • Vols 1 and 4 each have sticker on endpaper for Bibliotheca Elzeviriana.
  • Vols 1, 2, 3 have aging green satin bookmark
  • Vol 4 exhibits diminishing dampstain in gutter through most of the first section (Prefatio ad Lectorem).
  • Interior is age-toned with scattered foxing. 
  • Very little writing or marks can be found, all with a fine nib in tiny notes or lines.
  • Text block edges are lavishly marbled, with notable dust at heads.
  • Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear.
