Jack Whitten (1939-2018) was born in Alabama.  He moved to New York City in 1960, got his BFA at Cooper Union, and remained in New York to paint.  Stylistically, Whitten's work shows the influence of abstract expressionism; thematically he was affected by the struggle for civil rights.
