William W. Dobbins may have been an "illiterate sailor," as he calls himself in his Preface, but this  account of a War of 1812 naval battle tries to recount the events impartially, without regard for the personalities and clashes between the protagonists which had colored some previous accounts.  The author's father, naval captain Daniel Dobbins (d. 1856), was a pioneer in the construction of the United States' squadron, and he served actively on the upper lakes during the war.  His accounts, together with documents he held, inspired and informed this chronicle by his son of the pivotal battle off the coast of Ohio, in which the American fleet gained control and turned the tides against the British.

First edition.
