Mary White Ovington (1865-1951), co-founder of the NAACP, writes about life has a Black American in NYC around the turn of the century. While her approach to the subject is a bit out-dated and sometimes judgy, she uses data and facts to paint a clear portrait of the unfair living conditions and social expectations of the day. The book is historically relevant, and the reader can see what has and has not changed for the lives of urban Black Americans. Despite her moralizing, she was "adamant for equal opportunity with whites, [as well as] sympathetic to the importance of black community feeling. (Kirkus)

Provenance: This copy was previously owned by Lucius C. Harper, perhaps best known as the writer of "Jack Johson--In the Ring And Out," worked for a time as editor at The Chicago Defender--a Chicago-based weekly newspaper founded in 1905."
