First American printing.  Philadelphia: T.B. Peterson & Brothers, 1861  

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Dark brown cloth covers are mostly clean, with blind tooled borders and medallions; gilt text and illustration on spine.  
  • Boards show some wear, aging, warping, and edgewear.  Corners are frayed, with exposed board.  
  • Spine has gilt text and is dulled, with wear at shoulders and bumped and frayed ends.
  • Binding is strong.  
  • End papers and pastedowns show light age toning; a small pencil mark at back pastedown.  
  • Frontispiece is present and has intact tissue guard.
  • Illustrations are clear, plates are age toned.
  • Plate listed at page 53 is frontispiece;
  • Plate listed at page 63 is at page 65;
  • Plate listed at page 131 is title page;
  • Plate listed at page 171 is at page 173.   
  • Interior is gently age-toned, with marginal toning.   
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Inside pages have illustration shadows on facing pages.  
  • Text block edges are a little dusty.

The first United States printing in book form of Dickens' Great Expectations.  This volume was published as part of Petersons' "uniform edition of Dickens' works."  As listed on the title page, this edition was printed from "the manuscript and early proof sheets purchased from the author."  With thirty-four illustrations from original designs by John McLenan.  Some plates have been rearranged from their original position, to make up frontispiece and title page in this edition.

Printed two columns per page.
