Francis Picabia

by Hans Peter-Wipplinger, Rainer Metzger and Zdenek Felix

Based on his date of birth, Francis Picabia is still thought of as part of classical Modernism and especially the avant-guard circles around Dada and Marcel Duchamp. But art history and art criticism have had difficulties with classifying Picabia for a long time. His lack of respect for strongly held artistic dogmas led him to constantly oppose the currently dominant Zeitgeist, not least in order to avoid any type of pigeonholing. He was a great innovator, provocateur, rake, lateral thinker, transgressor of classical Modernism, and, simultaneously, a post-modernist avant a lettre who has gone down in art history for his style dissonance.

To mark the Picabia retrospective, Kunsthalle Krems is taking a closer look at the irony his constant changes in style and in this way engage in a reevaluation of Modernism as well as raise awareness of the relevance of Picabia's art to the present day.

A volume produced as a companion to the Francis Picabia Retrospective held at the Kunsthalle Krems in Donau, Austria. Includes a foreword by Hans-Peter Wipplinger, an Austrian exhibition organizer, author and museum director whose interview with the artist is presented in full. Additional essays included in this volume are In Praise of the Funny GuyInventor of Pop Art by Jean-Jacques Lebel, Only Money is Genius by Rainer Metzger and The Satyr with the Brush by Zdenek Felix. As a retrospective, this volume includes a brief biography, a timeline of the artist's life and work and several high quality reproductions including samples selected from his work featured in Andre Breton's magazine Litterature and a poster for his ballet scored by Erik Satie. 204 pages. 8.5" by 10.25".
