FRANCIS PICABIA, for Kunsthalle Krems exhibition - 2012$125.00
by Hans Peter-Wipplinger, Rainer Metzger and Zdenek Felix
Based on his date of birth, Francis Picabia is still thought of as part of classical Modernism and especially the avant-guard circles around Dada and Marcel Duchamp. But art history and art criticism have had difficulties with classifying Picabia for a long time. His lack of respect for strongly held artistic dogmas led him to constantly oppose the currently dominant Zeitgeist, not least in order to avoid any type of pigeonholing. He was a great innovator, provocateur, rake, lateral thinker, transgressor of classical Modernism, and, simultaneously, a post-modernist avant a lettre who has gone down in art history for his style dissonance.
To mark the Picabia retrospective, Kunsthalle Krems is taking a closer look at the irony his constant changes in style and in this way engage in a reevaluation of Modernism as well as raise awareness of the relevance of Picabia's art to the present day.
