Civilian Confederate Letter

from Atlanta, to mother.

Dated: Atlanta July 9, 1863

Signed: J no E S (or Jms E.S.?)

An Atlanta, GA shopkeeper writes a letter to their mother between customers at the store. Opens with mention of the loss at Vicksburg, and continues writing in a stream of consciousness "written at random without any system" about concerns, family, experiences, business and more. Specifically mentioned are refugees in the city, travel for business and pleasure (AL & southern GA), the Federals, family in Tenn., concerns of effects of the war, relocating the business, family members' health and well-being. Expresses the desire to to send vegetables to parents in Greenville (South Carolina?), but the railroad is down.

This personal letter is unique in that offers a keyhole glimpse into the life of an everyday business owner, trying to maintain life as usual despite the war. There is enough varied information to create something of a story, especially if supplemented with common historical information.

Printed transcription included, with few uncertainties. Punctuation however is approximate, as writer used an informal personal style.
