This catalog presents Cecily Brown's later works, illustrating a change in her artistic vision from the early years. In contrast with the recognizable, often erotic subject matter of her first paintings, those featured here exemplify the abstract touch she acquired later on, with her works occasionally being associated to abstract realism. They show us shapes, forms that are not clearly defined, inviting us to ourselves attribute to these shapes their figurative meaning. Elusive, mysterious, and never permanent, these meanings can be different for everyone of us, engaging a reflection on Edgar Degas, Francis Bacon, whose quotes are discussed in the essays, as well as the true meaning of shape, color, and movement.

Cecily Brown (b. 1969) is a British painter who lives and works in New York City. Her work displays the influence of a large variety of painters, including Willem de Kooning, Francisco de Goya, Francis Bacon, as well as older masters like Rubens and Poussin.
