Very scarce 1857 FIRST EDITION. Features 150 engravings including two in stunning color and a B&W frontis of Don Pedro II. Includes fold out map. Subject matter includes history, religion, geography, travel, literature, climate, nature, diseases and much more, including nine appendices. 630 pages followed by a prospectus for a biography of Elisha Kent Kane.

Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Rear hinge is entirely split which has lead to the textblock being partially detached. Please see photos. 
  • Half bound in leather and decorative paper the boards show significant scuffing to the paper with additional wear along the edges and shoulders.
  • Leather corners are scuffed with exposed boards. 
  • Spine features five raised bands and red leather title blocks with bright gilt lettering and border; the ends are badly scuffed and chipped, with peeling strips of leather along the shoulder and ends, with more significant wear to the lower portion. Please see photos. 
  • Excepting broken back hinge, binding is secure with some play, with the occasional cracked gutter.
  • Marble endpapers are faded with subtle age-toning and darkening along the perimeter with ripples across the surface.
  • Ffep bears writing in pencil on the reverse side. 
  • Foldout map is tattered though complete. (see photos)
  • Title page bears signature in ink. 
  • Frontispiece is toned with some foxing. Tissue guard has a faint shadow. 
  • Illustrations plates are vibrant with toning and marginal foxing. Tissue guards bear foxing and faint shadows. 
  • Two hand colored plates in good condition
  • Interior is gently age-toned with light scattered foxing. 
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.
  • Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear.
