"To be a young female in America is a time of excitement and social possibilities The book contains 37 duo-tone images of 12 year old girls. The girls are the children of friends and relatives of Mann in her home state of Virginia. Unlike Mann's later work the images within the book do not feature nudity." Her second book saw some controversy over her photos of girls on the edge of womanhood. Karen Lipson of "Newsday" described it as: "Haunting black-and-white studies of children, shown here as surprisingly sensual and often distant beings, the magical keepers of some obscure and vaguely frightening secrets."

Sally Mann (b. 1951) is a critically American photographer who has won many awards, with work in many notable permanent collections both at home and abroad. Her specialty is large format B&W, and she has produced an impressive body of work, and been the subject of two documentaries and other features.
