Hardbacks are overall in VERY GOOD condition.

  • Volumes are in overall very good condition with moderate wear to covers and mild aging inside.
  • Covers feature title block on front (except on vols 3 and 4) and display notable edgewear with rubbing and exposed boards, bumps, and overall fading and toning. 
  • Volume 3 exhibits bubbled-warping on an area near lower edge of front cover. 
  • Spine of Volume 3 is mended with transparent tape, and cracked through title block, with a 1.25" long  chip at head. Front shoulder is cracked on a length of 5.25" from head. (See photos)
  • Spines are in cloth, except for Volume 3, and feature toned white title block with black lettering, and show toning, as well as wear at ends, with rubbing and softening.
  • Volume 4 shows some damp staining on front. (See photos)
  • Volume 5 displays some red staining and scuffs on front. Volume 6 exhibits damp staining along edges, and scuffing on front. (See photos)
  • Binding is overall secure in all volumes.
  • Interior is well preserved in all volumes, with overall mild age-toning.
  • Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. 
  • Textblock edges display expected toning with occasional foxing. Page edges show occasional creasing and small tears.
  • Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear.

Covering all subjects, from finance to military, from dedications, decrees, to obituaries and epitaphs, the collection of the British Museum is here documented with accurate descriptions of the meaning and origin of each inscription. A photograph of the stone or the material on which the inscription has been engraved or written, is sided with the text reproduced in Ancient Greek alphabet, and captioned with precision. 

Illustrated with B&W plans and some B&W photographs. Contains lists of illustrations and inscriptions. Inscriptions are in Ancient Greek. 

The six volumes are distinguished by region:
  • Part 1: Attika. 
  • Part 2. 
  • Part 3 section 1: Priene and Iasos. 
  • Part 3 section 2: Ephesos. 
  • Part 4 section 1: Knidos, Halikarnassos and Branchidae. 
  • Part 4 section 2: supplementary and  miscellaneous inscriptions.
  • Sir Charles Thomas Newton (1816-1894) was a British archaeologist and prolific writer, including official publications for the British Museum.
