An Essay on the History of Civil Society
by Adam Ferguson
A noted philosopher and historian of the Scottish Enlightenment, Adam Ferguson here delivers a masterful study of human society which is not only a remarkable work on the ways of society, but also a deep anthropology analysis. In a relevant structure, the author starts from the individual, discussing moral sentiment, the basic instinct of self-preservation, the intellect, and goes on to the functioning of society, nations, offering a thorough examination of all the phenomenons resulting from the association of men. War, corruption, political slavery, despotism, up to the arts and literature and their history, are all discussed with brilliant insight and scholarly discipline in this exceptional volume. 464 pages. 5.5 x 8.75 inches.
