Presented is a 19th century fully leather bound illustrated handbook that provides a review of the plant sciences with sections covering taxonomy, phytotomy, or plant anatomy, respiration and reproduction with exercises and questions throughout. Following the body of the text are 44 botanical illustrations accompanied by a section of related taxonomical nomenclature and an extensive glossary and index. 314 + pages. 3.5" by 6".

As stated on the title page, at the time of publication this volume originally included 45 illustrations.. However, this particular edition is missing plate 21 for a total of 44 illustrations.

Hardback is overall in GOOD condition.

  • Full leather binding is in overall good condition with the typical signs of gentle aging.
  • The leather boards show moderate wear with the front board showing a 1" laceration to the lower portion and the rear board showing scuffing and a pronounced crease that runs from the fore edge to the bottom edge of the board.
  • The shoulders are lightly cracked along the length though becoming more apparent along the uppermost regions.
  • The spine features six bands and a black title block with gilt lettering, all intact.
  • The leather of the spine shows wear to head and tail with light abrasions and chipping along the length.
  • Moderate edgewear.
  • Front pastedown and front matter bears several faint pencil marks.
  • The textblock is in overall good condition showing apparent signs of aging and light wear such as gentle wrinkles age toning and foxing.
  • Plate 41 shows a small tear where a portion of the leaf was attached to the following plate and torn away. Here it remains, Plate 42 bears this remnant. Please see photos.
  • Plates show foxing as is consistent with the rest of the interior.
  • The binding is tight in areas, secure overall.
  • Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear.
